Resistance Measured by Airflow Perturbation Compared with Standard Pulmonary Function Measures

چکیده
Background: Routine lung function testing requires expensive equipment, or requires maximum expiratory effort. The airflow perturbation device (APD) is a light handheld device, allowing for serial measures of respiratory resistance noninvasively and effortlessly. Methods: In a convenience sample of 398 patients undergoing pulmonary function testing, we compared routine spirometric indices (forced expired volume in 1 second (FEV1), peak expiratory flow (PEF)), and airways resistance (Raw-272 patients), to measures of respiratory resistance measured with the APD including inspiratory (IR), expiratory (ER) and averaged (AR) resistance. Results: Measures of lung function were significantly correlated (p < 0.001). On regression analysis, between 7% 17% of the variance (R) for FEV1, PEF, and Raw was explained by APD measurements. Approximately 2/3 of the variance in FEV1 was explained by PEF measurements. Conclusions: APD measurements of lung function correlate with conventional measures. Future studies should be directed at exploring the use of the APD device in serial measures of lung function in patients with lung disease.

Abstract Background & Aims: The peripheral parts of the lung are known as the main place of airflow obstruction in asthmatic patients; but the symptoms of asthma with the location of airway obstruction are still unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between asthma symptoms and severity of asthma and proximal and distal airways using function tests. Materials &...
متن کاملDecrease of resistance to air flow with nasal strips as measured with the airflow perturbation device
BACKGROUND Nasal strips are used by athletes, people who snore, and asthmatics to ease the burden of breathing. Although there are some published studies that demonstrate higher flow with nasal strips, none had directly measured the effect of the strips on nasal resistance using the airflow perturbation device (APD). The APD is an inexpensive instrument that can measure respiratory resistance b...
متن کاملTesting Low Doses of Caffeine on Respiratory Resistance Using the Airflow Perturbation Device
Research reports on pulmonary function measurements often mention caffeine abstinence as a condition for testing subjects. Yet, the effects of caffeine on respiration are not well documented. This study was intended to investigate the physiological effects of caffeine on respiratory resistance measurements and the necessity of caffeine avoidance in such testing. Thirty-one subjects were adminis...

Background and Objective: Pelvic girdle and respiratory muscles weakness and hyperglycemia are associated with reduced lung capacity. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of core muscles strengthening on pulmonary function in obese women with type II diabetes. Materials and Methods: The population of the research were all women with diabetes type II in District 2 o...

A new device for measuring airway resistance following brief airflow interruption (Microlab 4000; Micromedical Ltd, UK) was evaluated in 25 asthmatic school children in comparison with well-established methods. Airway resistance was measured during brief airflow interruption (Rint), before and after administration of salbutamol 200 micrograms by metered-dose inhaler, and in the spirometric para...
